Roman Clothing
Ancient Roman Clothing has always struck a particular chord with people throughout history wanting to re-live this or the other aspect of those ancient times. Dressing up in a toga has recurred over and over again from the times of Shakespeare’s plays through to the antics of Toga parties and Cinema productions such as Cleopatra, Ben Hur and The Gladiator. The consequence is that numerous items of Roman clothing and apparel are easily available in commerce and can be easily purchased online. All this has led to a popular albeit superficial understanding of what Roman clothing was all about.
Medieval Clothes
The poor country people prepared their own fabrics and the noble and the affluent classes had the option of buying their own imported fabrics. Now what kind of Materials do you think were used in the medieval clothes? It was the domestic wool, which was revised into cloths of different and varying strengths –the durable, felt and carded fabrics. Among all of them the most expensive, the finest and the most colorful cloth was undoubtedly the most expensive merchandise imported from anywhere. On the other hand preparing the fabrics and the threads was a very time-consuming yet a valued craft.
Renaissance Clothing
Renaissance culture was very conscious of fashion, and their costume was extremely stylized, very complex and elaborate, and above all, striking. The very nature of the Renaissance clothing style was to make a statement, whether that was of status, power or of wealth. The popular image that we have of Renaissance Dresses, particularly that of England, is what was worn by the upper classes. Style was paramount, and both men and women in the Renaissance woreclothing we would consider costumes, similar to the ‘costumes’ we wear in formal occasions today.

Pirate Costume
Creating a pirate costume is not an ordinary act. Many things have to be kept in mind from head to toe to design a pirate costume. Generally this kind of dress consists of pants of Asian silk and shirts of African cotton. Jewels and trinkets from every corner of the known world are spotted for the clothing. Other accessories also play an important role and without all those heavy accessories you will not be able to completely involve yourself into a real pirate.
Medieval Clothing
Daily life during the middle Ages is sometimes hard to fathom. From the 11th through the 13th centuries, medieval clothing varied according to the social standing of the people. The clothing worn by nobility and upper classes was clearly different than that of the lower class. As with today, medieval clothing styles of men and women changed periodically. At the end of the 13th century, the clothing styles of both men and women got changed.
Ancient Roman Clothing
Ancient Rome was very much a “face-to-face” society (actually more of an “in-your-face” society), and public display and recognition of status were an essential part of having status. Much of
Ancient Roman Clothing was designed to reveal the social status of its wearer, particularly for freeborn men. In typical Roman
fashion, the more distinguished the wearer, the more his dress was distinctively marked, while the dress of the lowest classes was often not marked at all. In the above diagram, for example, we
can deduce that the first man on the left is a Roman citizen (because he wears a toga) but is not an equestrian or senator (because he has no stripes on his tunic). We know that the woman is
married because she wears a stola. Colored shoes and the broad stripes on his tunic identify the next man as a senator, while the border on his toga indicates that he has held at least one curule
office.
Medieval dresses
Medieval dresses reflected the social status of the individual. The Lords of manors, for example wore a light shirt made of
linen as their undergarment. A heavy decorated gown called a houppelande, sometimes made of velvet was worn over it. A belt with a purse attached was worn with a belt buckle made of jewels. The
gown had bagpipe sleeves, which were baggy but tight at the sleeves. A hat called a chaperon was favored by the lords, the hat used to have long tails called liripipes. Pointed shoes were
preferred and during winter a heavy fur lined cloak was worn. The ladies usually wore woollen gowns that were very long with sleeves that could touch the ground.
Renaissance Dresses
The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, and marked a jump in art, literature, religion, and science throughout Europe. The effects of this time period are still being felt today. Around the
country there are hundreds of Renaissance Fairs every year where fans can dress up in Renaissance Dresses and see shows, feast
on period cuisine, and partake in other activities. Renaissance Fairs may be set in the Elizabethan Era of England, though other popular themes include 18th century pirates or the French
Renaissance. For many, historical accuracy is a must, and costume wearers, artisans, and entertainers go all out for the celebration.

Style was paramount, and both men and women in the Renaissance wore clothing we would consider costumes, similar to the ‘costumes‘ we wear in formal occasions today. Look at a modern wedding to
see a perfect example. If an historian were to see a photo of a wedding in our time, might he not think we wore such finery all the time.
